Where to go in 2008

A mix of ancient wonders, Caribbean delights, European gems and off the beaten track locations make up the Top 10 travel destinations for 2008.

That's according to the well-travelled folk at Flight Centre, whose global network of travel consultants have studied travel trends, surveyed customers and come up with the list of places to explore in 2008.

Philippines
Great for travellers who have visited her neighbours numerous times, the Philippines is home to bustling Manila, remote tropical islands and legendary scuba diving spots.

The Philippines has some superb all-inclusive luxury resorts spread around the islands. Independent travellers who like to wander off the beaten track, and don't mind doing without the conveniences like running water, will find plenty to fascinate them in the countryside and coastal parts of the Philippines.

The Philippines is one of the few places left in the world where adventurers can wander through tribal lands. Also, the food is delicious, and English is widely spoken.

Cyprus
There is a great deal packed into a small space on the island of Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean. Not only does it abound with good beaches and holiday resorts, but its relatively tiny landmass is riddled with the relics of ancient history, from the beehive huts of primitive man to classical Greek and Roman ruins, and everything imaginable in-between.

Perfect for travellers who have visited Europe numerous times and want somewhere new and exciting. The island has a range of accommodation from backpackers to five-star resorts to cater for all travellers.

In Cyprus it is possible to mingle with crowds, or seek isolation off the beaten track as the mood takes you, even in peak holiday season. For this reason the island is also a favoured destination for honeymooners, a reputation enhanced by the fact that legend has it that Cyprus was where Aphrodite, Greek goddess of love, rose from the sea.

Kenya
Kenya is the 'Land of the Lion King' and sits at the centre of the African safari experience, with an outstanding variety of wild animals and Big Five viewing opportunities.

Travellers are starting to flock to Kenya in droves as they can choose to do as little or as much as they like. There are now more tours to Kenya then ever before and availability during peak season is limited. The combination of wildlife, together with its beaches and mountains, make Kenya a fantastic holiday destination. Best to wait until the post-election strife has calmed down though.

Croatia
A welcome return to Flight Centre?s top 10 list ? Croatia is becoming a firm favourite with South Africans. So much so that the Croatian Embassy is having trouble keeping up with the demand for visas.

With its sublime stretch of Adriatic coast, Croatia has long been regarded as one of the most beautiful parts of Europe. Despite the tragedy of war, its charms remain largely intact; most of the tourist areas have been lovingly recreated.

Jordan
With Petra now a modern wonder of the world, Jordan is firmly on the tourist radar. With a reputation for being one of the friendliest countries on earth, it is time for people to explore its immense sense of history, as well as two of the most magnificent sights in the Middle East: the ancient rock-hewn city of Petra and Wadi Rum's spectacular desert scenery.

Jordan is a kingdom layered in antiquity, from the work of Nabataean stonemasons to characters such as Moses and Lawrence of Arabia; from ancient cities and Biblical sites to desert castles, Crusader forts and Byzantine mosaics. This ancient culture belies the fact that it is also a modern country with a good infrastructure, a thriving business and arts scene, and first class hotels, restaurants and shopping opportunities. The contradictions between the old and new are astonishing.

Laos
Slowly gaining popularity, Laos offers natural beauty and shy hospitality combined with a mix of original Buddhist culture and French influences.

It is the least developed of the three former French Indochina states and offers visitors a glimpse of the traditional way of life.

Those willing to brave the lack of infrastructure will discover charming towns and rural villages, smiling, endearing people, splendid scenery, and a slow, relaxed pace of life.

Cuba
Cuba is the Caribbean's largest and least commercialised island and one of the world's last bastions of communism. Its relative political isolation has prevented it from being overrun by tourists, and locals are sincerely friendly to those who do venture in. Cuba will change significantly over the next few years, so get in quick and watch it evolve.

Situated in the mouth of the Gulf of Mexico, Cuba is an attractive alternative to the usual Caribbean fare. Cuba?s most famous export must be cigars, and even non-smokers will be fascinated by a tour to one of two factories in Havana. Visitors can see cigars still rolled by hand. At the Partagas factory, founded in 1827, a reader is employed to keep workers entertained while they roll the world famous cigars.
