Wild on Australia: Get Up Close with Native Animals
One of the Australia's biggest attractions is its unique fauna -- from its iconic kangaroo to the more bizarre platypus and the potentially dangerous Cassowary. Although you are likely to get a good glimpse at most of the country's wildlife in a zoo -- both Sydney (www.zoo.nsw.gov.au) and Melbourne (www.zoo.org.au) have exceptional zoos -- there are several other alternatives and none better than actually seeing the animals in their own habitat.
Kangaroos
I remember traveling and meeting people who thought that kangaroos actually hopped down the streets in Australia's major cities. To some lesser extent, in Anglesea, a small beachside town 68 miles west of Melbourne, they are correct. A trip to Australia's southern state of Victoria is hardly complete without a visit to the Great Ocean Road (www.greatoceanrd.org.au), a visually spectacular stretch of road and home to the landmark Twelve Apostles rock formations. Anglesea is the official starting point to the Road and it is here that you will likely see kangaroos making their way along streets, albeit small, quiet cul-de-sacs.
Their true home in this town is the Anglesea Golf Club (www.angleseagolfclub.com.au), where you will see literally hundreds of them lying basking in the sun or bouncing across the manicured fairways. In my opinion this is perhaps the best place to see kangaroos (short of a visit to the outback) and it won't cost you a cent (unless of course you choose to play a round of golf). In recent times the golf club has installed fences as a barrier (I'm not sure if it is to keep the kangaroos in or out), but you can still gain access. Apart from kangaroos, the golf course's trees are a breeding ground for various birds including galahs and sulfur-crested cockatoos.
And for a stunning visual of kangaroos frolicking on the beach, try Ulladulla or Pebbly Beach, on the south coast of New South Wales, approximately 110 miles south of Sydney. Here, Eastern Grey kangaroos from the nearby Murramarang National Park (www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au), tend to hang out and cool off after a hot day, both in the sand dunes and in the water.
Platypus
The mysterious platypus is one of Australia's most intriguing cute and furry native animals. Although it has fur like a mammal, it has a duck bill and lays eggs like a reptile. They are shy creatures so seeing one in the wild, is a special experience. Eungalla National Park (www.epa.qld.gov.au) 50 miles west of Mackay (about half way between Brisbane and Cairns) in Queensland, is considered your best bet for a viewing. Access to the park is free for day trips, although if you intend to camp there overnight, fees do apply. Broken River runs through the park and several platforms have been set up along the river's banks to provide look out points for platypus sighting. Apart from the platypus (which is best seen early in the morning or late in the afternoon), the park is also known for its eels, turtles, rare species of frogs, a colorful selection of native birds (rainbow lorikeets, honeyeaters and pittas) various gliders (tawny frogmouths, sugar gliders and brushtail possums).
Koalas
Koalas seem to be every visitor's favorite and there are currently a handful of wildlife centers that allow you to hold them (this practice was phased out in most states after lobbying by wildlife advocates who rightfully argued that these wild animals should not be handled). The Cairns Tropical Zoo (www.cairnstropicalzoo.com.au) charges a fee of $13 extra to cuddle a koala (or a snake) and get your picture taken, on top of the admission fee of $25 for adults and $13 for children. The Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary (www.koala.net/index.htm), near Brisbane, located less than an hour from the Gold Coast, also lets you hold and get photographed with one of their 100 plus koalas (for an additional fee of $8.50 over admission price) or perhaps a croc or a snake ($13). You can also hand feed the kangaroos. The Sanctuary also boasts Tasmanian devils, echidnas, dingoes and wombats. Entry for adults is $19, children are $15 and students/seniors are $16. Sydney's Taronga Zoo (www.zoo.nsw.gov.au) will let you be photographed next to one (a fee of $14 and a rather long wait in line awaits you). Admission to the zoo is rather pricey -- $32 for adults and $16 for kids but the views back on to Sydney Harbor and the city are well worth it.
Philip Island in Victoria, less than 90 miles from Melbourne and home to the famous fairy penguin parade, was also once known as the koala capital. Unfortunately, excessive building and destruction of their native habitat has meant that the koalas are no longer in such great numbers there but the Philip Island Koala Conservatory (www.phillipisland.net.au/koalas/koalacentre.html), part of the Phillip Island Nature Park, is considered one of the best places in the country to see these beloved marsupials. Remember that koalas generally sleep for upwards of 20 hours per day, so although you may see them, don't expect them to bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. Admission is $8 or $4 for children.
Although there are no guarantees, there are many places where you can still see koalas in the wild. I have personally spotted them in the trees at Philip Island, in Noosa Heads National Park in Queensland and on the Mornington Peninsula (Shoreham to be exact) about an hour outside Melbourne. Both Port Stephens and Port Macquarie in New South Wales are home to sizeable wild koala populations. These docile creatures can get rather loud and animated at night while they are 'doing what comes naturally,' so don't be alarmed if you hear them.
Cassowary
The Emu isn't Australia's only large flightless bird. The endangered Cassowary, with its bright blue head, red wattles and glossy black coat is another, and these awesome yet aggressive animals are best viewed from a safe distance. Cassowaries can grow up to six feet six inches tall and can weigh close to 200 pounds so you don't want to mess with them. They have a dagger-like claw on each foot, can run over 30 miles per hour and have been known to attack if they feel threatened. I came across several along rainforest trails in Cape Tribulation (www.daintreecoast.com) in North Queensland, about 80 miles north of Cairns. The area is a paradise of beaches, mangroves and rivers where two World Heritage listed regions, the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest, meet. It is also home to crocodiles, so when the beach signs indicate not to enter the water, you'd best adhere to the rules.
Dolphins
Although not uniquely Australian, dolphins play happily on the shorelines of several coast in Australia and it is not difficult to get up close and personal with them in Tangalooma in Queensland or Bunbury in Western Australia where you can swim alongside pods. But for the most interactive experience, if you can get to remote World Heritage listed Monkey Mia and Shark Bay on the Coral Coast (www.australiascoralcoast.com) of Western Australia over 500 miles from Perth, you will certainly be rewarded. Here the dolphins come into shore and you need only wade waist deep in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean to play with these loveable creatures. You'll also get to experience dugongs (Australian manatees) and sea turtles, not to mention some of the most stunning white sand beaches in the country.

Iberian Museums' Treasure Trove of European Art
In The Stone Raft, Portugal's Nobel Prize-winning novelist Jose Saramago conjured a scenario in which the Iberian Peninsula cracks off from the rest of Europe and floats out to sea. If that were to happen, Spanish and Portuguese art lovers and connoisseurs of modern architecture would still be satisfied.
In the decade that followed the opening of Frank Ghery's extraordinarily progressive Guggenheim Museum (tel. (+34) 94 435 90 80; www.guggenheim-bilbao.es/ingles/home.htm) in Bilbao, Spain, in October 1997, Spain and Portugal have been following suit by commissioning top architects to design modern landmark museums for exceptional art collections.
Most recently, the Bilbao effect has manifested itself with the new annex of Madrid's renowned Museo del Prado (tel. (+34) 91 330 2800; www.museodelprado.es), by far the museum's most significant expansion in 200 years. Designed by Rafael Moneo and officially opened by King Juan Carlos and Queen Sof'a, the Jeronimos Wing expands the museum by more than half.
The Prado now encompasses the original neoclassical building linked via an underground connector to the neighboring 17th-century Cloister of the Jeronimos, whose exterior has been restored and its interior turned into new museum space. The opening exhibition, "The 19th Century in the Prado: A Collection Rediscovered," celebrates 19th-century Spanish art.
The original Prado is a grand old museum filled with works by Old Masters, a noteworthy assemblage of Greco-Roman marble and a major inaugural exhibition called "Velazquez's Fables. Mythology and Sacred History in the Golden Age." This original section has been cleaned up and fixed up to be a worthy anchor for the gleaming $209 million, 237,000-square-foot new wing.
Centro de Arte Reina Sofia (tel. (+34) 91 774 10 00; www.museoreinasofia.es) is Madrid's temple to modern art, and one of the world's largest contemporary art museums. The collection is housed in an 18th-century hospital flanked by two modern glass towers and now an enormous, three-structure expansion designed by Jean Nouvel that more than doubled its size.
The Reina Sofia became internationally known when it became the permanent home of Pablo Picasso's monumental and iconic Guernica, which he painted for the Spanish Pavilion at the 1937 Paris World's Fair. New York's Museum of Modern Art returned the monumental painting portraying the violence and senselessness of war to Spain only after the death of dictator Generalissimo Francisco Franco.
The Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza (tel. (+34) 91 369 01 51; www.museothyssen.org) began in 1920 as a private collection started by a nobleman. It spans eight centuries of European art from the Middle Ages through the 21st century and geographically from Spain and Italy to Holland and Flanders. Manuel Baquero and Francesc Pla's new addition to the historic Palacio de Villahermosa opened to display both permanent and temporary exhibitions.
In Lisbon, the capital of neighboring Portugal, a new museum opened in June for another private collection. The Museu Coleccao Berarado (tel. (+351) 21 361 2878; www.museuberardo.pt) was created out of former exposition space within the Belem Cultural Center, which also houses the city's main performing arts center. Jose Berardo was born on Madeira in 1944, made a fortune from gold mining and currently has interests ranging from environmental restoration to vineyards and wineries. His collection comprises 862 works by important Portuguese and international artists. Christie's has valued Berardo's exhibited works at nearly $423 million -- and that was before the US dollar's decline.
Curators, who have identified 70 artistic trends from expressionism to hyper-realism, meet the challenge of frequently changing individual pieces or entire galleries to present Berardo's works in eye-opening combinations. Among the 500 artists represented are Picasso, Dali, Warhol, de Kooning, Miro, Hockney, Lichtenstein and other marquee names.

Είναι η πιο ακριβή φυλακή του κόσμου. Δεν αναφερόμαστε βέβαια στο ..... ενοίκιο αλλά στην αξία του τεράστιου οικοπέδου. Υπολογίζεται ότι η γη στην οποία είναι χτισμένη η συγκεκριμένη φυλακή αξίζει περίπου 100 εκατομμύρια δολάρια. Υπάρχει η φήμη, σύμφωνα με την οποία, είναι ένα από τα πιο ακριβά οικόπεδα σε όλη τη χώρα! Ίσως παίζει ρόλο το γεγονός ότι έχει θέα τον ωκεανό, προσφέροντας στους «φιλοξενούμενους» μια πιο καλαίσθητη διαμονή. Ποιος ξέρει;

At the Edge of the World's Highest Bungee Jump
Greetings from South Africa. Last week, we left off from my amazing safari up in Hoedspruit. The town is located in the northern part of South Africa and I was just 28 miles (45 kilometers) from the Mozambique border and 56 miles (90 kilometers) from Zimbabwe's. So cool. After the unforgettable animal encounters I shared with you last week, it was time to fly south to the coast and experience South Africa's Garden Route. Up for some fun in the sun? Hold on tight because we're in for some adventure. This week, we go zip-lining over the treetops and check out the world's highest bungee jump.
Hoedspruit to Johannesburg
To get to the city of George, I flew an hour back to Johannesburg International Airport (JNB) and changed planes for the two-hour flight to George. I guess the folks at JNB realize that security in Hoedspruit is a joke because they make passengers go through security again. Would you believe that I passed through the Hoedspruit metal detectors with everything in my pockets (phone, camera, coins ...) and didn't take anything out of my laptop bag and still, not a single beep? Talk about things that make you go hmmm ... On a positive note: The Hoedspruit airport is decorated like an African safari camp and they sell really tasty hot ham and cheese sandwiches for 18 Rand (US$2.60). But the bottled water tastes terrible so buy a soft drink instead.
Johannesburg to George
The 643-mile flight to George (GRJ) was on a 70-seater Dash 8-Q400 series twin-engine turboprop. The flight was smooth, the flight attendants passed out free sandwiches and the landscape below during the last 15 minutes of the flight was picturesque. I just pressed my nose against the window and gazed out. I witnessed the low clouds rolling in as they covered the base of the mountains, just like a blanket, leaving the mountaintops exposed so they could breathe.
The Garden Route
Dave Griffiths, who owns and runs Outeniqua Adventure Tours, met me at the airport with his wife Cheryl. Dave is a knowledgeable guide and more importantly, an excellent driver. And, as you'll see in the video below, Dave has a great voice, which made listening to his stories a real pleasure. My first question for Dave was, "What exactly is the Garden Route?" He said most people think it's because there are lots of gardens but it's really because so much grows here, since this area gets the most rainfall in South Africa. The Garden Route is a very popular and scenic stretch of the southern coast of South Africa. It goes from Mossel Bay in the Western Cape to Storms River. And when you get off the plane, you can immediately feel the difference in the temperature. Going south in the southern hemisphere is like going from Costa Rica to Los Angeles in April. The coast has a maritime climate with mild to chilly winters and moderately hot summers. Outeniqua Adventure Tours; tel. +27 (0) 44 871 1470. (Here's a scan of their business card)

We drove 44 miles (72 kilometers) east from George to the town of Knysna (pronounced NIZE-nuh). We took N2, which is the main coastal highway of South Africa and travel time took just under an hour. Knysna has become quite the destination for tourists, seniors in particular. You're sure to run into a lot of British ex-pats. Knysna is mostly built on the northern shore of a large warm-water estuary that opens up to the ocean. There are two large headlands on either side, which are known as "The Heads". They are infamous for their unpredictable waters, which have caused many a shipwreck.
Pezula Resort Hotel
I was fortunate enough to be checking into the nicest hotel in the area -- the luxurious Pezula Resort. It's a member of The Leading Small Hotels of the World and this place opened up in February 2005. You'll find 78 incredible suites in freestanding, two-tiered villas (four per villa). The villas are linked to the main building by manicured pathways and are accessible either by foot or by battery- operated golf cart. After taking one look at these killer rooms, each with a modern African decor, you'll understand why Pezula wins lots of awards, including a spot in Conde Nast Traveller UK Edition's Readers' Travel Awards for the Top 20 Overseas Leisure Hotels.
My Room
The owner of Pezula is a South African man who made his money in America by inventing the photocopy sorter. Now why didn't I think of that? The hotel is eco- friendly and has the most comfortable king-sized bed with Egyptian cotton linen sheets that are so soft, you don't want to do anything but lounge naked. On top of that, they offer a pillow menu. In each room there's a fireplace, a 28" flat screen TV, a huge marble bathroom with a separate shower and a modern oval shaped tub. The rooms are practical, too. They have international plug adaptors, cordless telephones, heated bathroom floors and tissues by the bed and bathroom. Don't you just hate having to get out of bed in the middle of the night to blow your nose?
Is This San Diego
When I opened up the blackout curtains in the morning, I thought I was looking out over San Diego Bay, not the Knysna lagoon. The view is so similar and the town has an identical feel to some of San Diego's suburbs. Bizarre, I know. My only complaint about the rooms is that the free wireless Internet access they offer was terrible. I even tried logging on in another room, in another part of the resort, and I had the same result. I was told that they are switching providers to alleviate this problem, which is great news for future guests. I also wasn't a huge fan of Zachary's, the hotel restaurant named after the owner's dog. Though the breakfast buffet was in incredible, the dinner menu just didn't do it for me. But then again, I'm a finicky eater. I don't eat veal, lamb, mushrooms, goat cheese or much seafood. What can I say? I know what I like and what I don't.
Pezula Spa
My friends all told me that some of the most beautiful women in the world hail from South Africa (ahem ... Charlize Theron ... ) and I have to say, there's no shortage of them working at Pezula. Not only are the women good-looking, but they understand customer service, too. And that couldn't have been more apparent than in the spa. I signed up for a one-hour massage and before going in to shed my drawers and don my robe, I asked the receptionists about the custom here. I didn't want a repeat of my experience in France. I told them what happened there and after they laughed their pretty heads off, they confirmed that I wouldn't be required to put on any paper underwear here. Phew!
Feel That Breeze
I strolled out of the unimpressive men's locker room wearing what must have been the world's shortest robe. I had a feeling that this was a mistake because the robe didn't even reach my knees and I could feel a breeze, well ... where I shouldn't have. I was feeling more naked than actually being naked, if that's possible. I took baby steps out to the reception area and noticed a woman waiting for her treatment, but she was wearing a robe that reached her ankles. Hmmm ... I approached the staff and asked if I was on Candid Camera. I could tell they were relieved to finally let out their laughter and say, "Oh, the short robe must have snuck into your locker by accident!" Sure it did.
The Indian Ocean
After my massage, I didn't feel like playing a round of golf on Pezula's renowned golf course. Instead, I took a tour of the hotel's brand-spanking-new honeymoon suite, called the castle. It was a 15-minute drive through the private Pezula Estates development. Even Roger Federer is building his dream house here. Like Roger's house, the castle has unbelievable views of the Indian Ocean, which is just steps away. BTW: Did you know that the Indian Ocean is much warmer than the Atlantic? But don't plan on swimming at this beach. It's way too rough. Pezula Resort; tel. +27 (0)44 302 5332.
Storms River
My next stop was Storms River and from Pezula, the drive is roughly an hour and 15 minutes. It's an easy trip as we hugged the coast for most of the way before heading inland into the mountains. Storms River is a small village, which I found to be a mix of California's Old West and Rotorua, New Zealand. The town functions as the gateway to the Tsitsikamma National Park and it's an eco-destination packed with adventurous and daring activities including the world's highest bungee jump.
World's Highest Bungee Jump
Believe me, one day I hope to muster up the cojones to bungee jump but when I do, you can be dang sure it will never be off the Bloukrans Storms River Bridge. These people are nuts and just watching them plummet from the viewing point made me anxious. What makes this 216-meter (708 feet) fall special is that the Guinness Book of World records claims this as the world's highest bungee jump. The worst part is that the daredevil jumpers don't even go all the way down, just about two thirds of the way. So when they're done bobbing like a yo-yo, they hang upside down from their ankles until a modern day Spiderman lowers himself down and gets the elated jumper harnessed for the hoist up. Is that gnarly or what? It costs 580 Rand and surprisingly, there's no shortage of people lined up for their turn. The wait is usually about two hours. Face Adrenalin also offers a bridge walk (50 Rand) and a flying fox (a zip line to the center of the bridge). See FaceAdrenalin.com for specifics.
Stormsriver Adventures
From the crazy bungee jump to the Tsitsikamma Village is less than a 15-minute drive. The main outfitter in town is Stormsriver Adventures. The owners have been rightly commended for their environmental and community work; they are a professional adventure and activity company based in the heart of the Tsitsikamma Forest supporting poverty relief programs. Their most popular attraction is Africa's first canopy tour. Here's an example: They charge 395 Rand for the canopy tour. The owner told me they could get 395 Rand without including a light lunch (sandwiches, hamburgers or salad) but by doing so, it gives 10 more people jobs, which in turn feeds 60 more people in the local village.
Canopy Tour
After lunch, my team and I suited up for the canopy tour, also known as zip-lining. Then we jumped in the bus for the seven-minute ride to the first slide. I've done zip-lining once before in Costa Rica (where the activity originated) and even though I was scared as all get out, it was quite an experience. The one I did in Costa Rica had 18 slides while Stormsriver has just ten. I figured it would be a piece of cake. Wrong!
Don't Be Chicken
The guides are young, enthusiastic, articulate, bright locals who are a joy to be around. They take their jobs seriously and do a good job stressing safety. In fact, I felt much more secure here than in Costa Rica because here, they use two wires and three safety catches. The first two slides were short but the third was fairly long and high, about 30 meters. Our guide announced that if anyone wanted to chicken out that this was the last chance since they have a short Chicken Slide that goes back to base camp. I seriously contemplated taking it but when I mentioned this to my friends, they blocked the path and said no. I don't know what happened but the fear just kicked in and my leg began shaking uncontrollably. It would have been the perfect time to audition for a Michael Jackson video but instead, I was preparing to zip from tree to tree like Tarzan. I was so scared that I literally hugged the tree that I was standing next to, 100 feet from the ground.
Fear is Temporary
I took a deep breath and realized that there were a lot of cameras pointed at my face, including the Stormsriver photographer who charges only 120 Rand for his time and excellent DVD. I didn't want to look like a wimp or have a video of me going down the Chicken Slide show up on the Internet, so I sucked it up and thought of the slogan I saw on one of the T-shirts in the Face Adrenaline gift shop ... FEAR is temporary, REGRET is forever. And you know what? I actually felt my fear subside around the fifth or sixth slide. It was remarkable. All of a sudden, I was a new man, pumped to go down the next one, which was the longest (100 meters). You'll see it all in my eyes when you watch the video below, but don't let me fool you completely ... I was still a little freaked out standing on the wobbly, see-through platforms. But they weren't as scary as the ones in Costa Rica. They are also just as eco-friendly; they didn't put one nail into a tree when setting up the tour. The whole thing took two and a half to three hours and the guides also told us all about the magnificent Tsitsikamma indigenous rainforest, the impact it has on visitors and what we might see. We saw a 600-year-old tree but no monkeys or snakes ... thank God.
Protea Hotel Tsitsikamma Village
Just 50 yards down the road from the Stormsriver Adventures office is the Protea Hotel Tsitsikamma. Protea is a major chain in Africa. The three-star Protea Hotel Tsitsikamma is a family-owned and managed hotel. It was established in 1946 but the main building dates back to 1845. The property consists of 49 freestanding rooms, village-style, where each cottage is individually decorated and has its own garden matching the specific colonial building style found in the Garden Route. The grounds and architecture made me feel like I was in Fiji or New Zealand. My room was cute and clean and came with a TV, phone and plugs for both South African and European converters. The shower was on the small side and the walls were thin but I still loved it ... even being awakened at 4:30am by roosters. FYI: There was no wireless Internet. Rates begin at 288 Rand per person. Protea Hotel Tsitsikamma, Darnell Street, Storms River, South Africa; tel. +27 (0) 42 281 1711.
Dinner at De Oude Martha Restaurant
At night, the temperature dropped, just like it does back home in Southern California. I ate at the hotel's only restaurant, De Oude Martha Restaurant. It had a French flair with a New Orleans feel: orange walls with wood paneling and low lighting. The dinner buffet served up traditional home cooked South African food like sweet carrots, chicken, fish, salad, bland pasta, string beans, brown bread, chocolate coffee mouse, bread pudding and ice cream.
Tsalanang Bed & Breakfast
Travelers are typically curious about life in townships and often want to experience it and help in some way. One way to help is to stay at a township Bed & Breakfast or going on a township tour. I checked out both. The Storms River 470 House Township is just a 10-minute walk from the Protea Hotel. I met with Geraldine (Gerri) Damans who owns, runs and lives at the Tsalanang B&B with her husband Mart, her six-foot-some white Dutch husband and their child. The house is clean costs 125 Rand per person for one of the three rooms she rents out. Breakfast and dinner are offered. What makes this place special, apart from the fact that it's right in the township, is that Gerri is the only black B&B owner in the area. Tsalanang B&B (The website is not working but here's a scan of her business card). Email: gerri@tsalanang.co.za.
Township Tour
Gerri also offers daily one-hour township tours for 50 Rand. I had no idea what the township tour would be like or how my friends and I would be received. However, everyone we walked by was so friendly (especially the children) and some residents even waved to us from the couches in their homes. Gerri told us that people living in the township earn an average of 600 Rand a month. That's it. But one of the locals has taken advantage of Gerri's tours by selling his beautiful wire art from his front yard. We stopped by and cleaned him out.
Tsitsikamma National Park
You can't visit Storms River without paying a visit to The Tsitsikamma National Park. The place is just jaw-droppingly beautiful. No wonder it's South Africa's second most popular national park after Kruger. This is where many South Africans spend there whole holiday. The park has a wide variety of accommodations from camping to oceanside cottages, all at affordable prices. Just having lunch on the deck and watching the waves pound against the jagged rocks is worth coming here for but there's a lot more, too. There are hiking trails of all lengths from 30 minutes to six days. There's even a suspension bridge but it was closed when I was there due to the high seas. Most hikes are unguided but if you have a group of more than 10 people you can book a guide for a small fee, to tour you around and tell you about the history and ecology of the area. That's what we did. Of course I had to ask the guide if there were any snakes. He nonchalantly replied that yes, they have two snakes, both are deadly but only one is aggressive. Was that supposed to make me feel better? Our short, easy hike lasted 45 minutes and we reached the top in 15 minutes. The views were inspiring and it perfectly capped off another adventurous week in South Africa. Tsitsikamma National Park; day passes for foreign adults cost 40 Rand. For more prices, see their tariffs list.

Dining in Vienna
Perhaps more than any other European city, Vienna has a lasting reverence for its culinary traditions, with white-tablecloth destinations like Hotel Sacher, Demel and Drei Husaren occupying the center stage for what seems like most of the past few centuries. But recently, a new generation has started to challenge that old order, updating the Austrian capital's traditionally formal dining scene with casual restaurants in unexpected settings, from inside museums to cheese shops and even bookstores.
Take the Dining Room (Maygasse 31; 43-1-804-8586; www.thediningroom.at), which opened last summer on a quiet lane in an outer residential district. Talk about truth in advertising: the Dining Room is very much a real dining room in a private home. With just four tables, it has the loose, informal atmosphere of a family dinner, complete with a large golden retriever as the house dog and plenty of overlapping conversations.
Despite the casual feel, the food is reassuringly accomplished, with different weekly set menus of international recipes. The owner and chef, Angelika Apfelthaler, prepares each evening's meal in her spotless open kitchen, then serves it herself with the help of a single hired staff member. The feeling is relaxed yet professional (although the same cannot be said of the house dog, Gino, who slyly swiped a roll from a diner's table when he thought no one was looking).
When I visited in mid-October, the Piedmont-inspired set menu (44 euros, or about $64 at $1.52 to the euro) started off with a lusciously warm chestnut and hazelnut soup followed by a salad of catalogue-perfect arugula leaves and sauteed porcini mushrooms dressed with a winelike balsamic vinegar. Next came a light zucchini-mint quiche with goat cheese and a cinnamon-scented tomato coulis, followed by a pasta course, gratineed gnocchi made of pumpkin, Austria's favorite autumn vegetable, and topped with fragrant truffle salt.
That might sound like plenty, but it turned out to be a mere prelude to the main course, a juicy duck breast accompanied by tangy cipollini and a rich, creamy risotto with saffron and red and green grapes. The duck was adorned tableside with a double-spray of aged Italian vinegar by Apfelthaler herself, in a manner that seemed to suggest that each customer was her personal favorite.
Beyond the personal attention and the quality of the food, it was hard not to feel lucky to be there: with room for just 12 diners and only one seating each evening, even the simple chocolate cake for dessert — a homey affair somewhere between a brownie and a fondant — felt like a special event.
Intimate seating is not exactly the draw at the spacious restaurant inside the city's Museum of Applied Art, or MAK, though it also manages to pull off some substantial magic. While most museum restaurants tend to be low-profile and barely good enough for a bite between exhibitions, Osterreicher im MAK (Stubenring 5; 43-1-714-0121; www.oesterreicherimmak.at) is run by Helmut Osterreicher, a star chef, and at least the private dining room generally requires reservations. On busy days, the larger front cafe and open dining areas out front are available for drop-in guests, though they quickly fill up with the crowds who have come to admire the museum's collections of Wiener Werkstatte furniture and decorative glass.
A veteran of the local dining scene, Osterreicher made his name serving classic Viennese dishes at the city's legendary Steirereck before it moved. At his own restaurant he offers two a la carte menus, one of traditional dishes and one of what he calls "newly interpreted" Viennese cuisine.
From the traditional menu, the clear beef soup was as fragrant and florid as a first-flush Darjeeling, balanced by the rich and slightly metallic notes of a single liver dumpling. Another classic appetizer was nearly a complete meal: kalbsrahmbeuscherl, a rich stew of cream, calf heart and lungs. The ribbonlike, spaghetti-size slices of meat did a great job camouflaging their origins, and the stew's robust flavor made for a perfect cold-weather warmer.
For main courses, I took the server's recommendation and tried the venison (18.60 euros) from the "modern" menu: five juicy loin medallions, served medium rare and accompanied by gingery stewed red cabbage, a thick demi-glace and a side of tart and sugary cranberry sauce. It was excellent, though the real winner was ordered by my companion.
It was the classic tafelspitz (17.80 euros), or boiled beef, a favorite of Emperor Franz Josef I of Austria. I doubt if Franz would have immediately recognized this version, served in a kitsch-cool airlinelike tray, accompanied by small bowls of grated apple-horseradish, fried potatoes and sour cream with chives. However, the note-perfect flavors would have surely been familiar: tender, slightly spicy sliced beef in a deeply aromatic light broth, surrounded by celery, parsnips and carrots.
With its updated recipes, high-style tableware and mid-20th-century-minimalist atmosphere, Osterreicher im MAK certainly pushes its modern side, though it is impossible to overlook the understated emphasis on local tradition. The drinks menu, for example, seems to be exclusively composed of Austrian wines and spirits, including a malty, reddish-brown draft beer made by Vienna's Ottakringer brewery, one of the few beers on the market that comes close to the nearly extinct Vienna lager style. Certainly there are very few museum restaurants in the world with such an unusual brew and a waiting list for reservations, but then very few of them are run by chefs like Osterreicher.
He left his earlier workplace, the highly praised Steirereck, when that restaurant changed locations a couple of years ago. As part of the move, the haute-cuisine Steirereck opened a second, low-key cafe called Steirereck Meirerei, inside the city's Stadtpark (43-1-713-3168; www.steirereck.at).
Meirerei means dairy, and Steirereck Meirerei primarily functions as a cheese shop, selling 120 varieties from 13 countries, though many are local. Fitting the theme, the decor starts out with blown-up photographs of osterkron and other cheeses before moving on to milky white walls and green floors. It feels less like a restaurant than a fashionable day spa, albeit one that smells suspiciously like Emmenthaler.
Perhaps because of the focus on dairy goods, the staff seemed uninterested in serving anything that was not cheese, though I talked them into bringing a hochzeitssuppe, or "wedding soup" (8 euros), clear beef bouillon filled with four excellent small bites: a crunchy, wonton-like crouton, a crispy strudel, a small, bacony biscuit and a semolina dumpling. The main courses of calf breast with Thanksgiving-turkey-like stuffing (12.50 euros) and Wiener schnitzel (14.50 euros) were spot-on classics, though slightly diminished by lackluster service.
It was only when I ordered a cheese course (7.9 euros) that the waiter finally found his inspiration, carving out six small portions for the Best of Austria selection: a fresh goat cheese from the Waldviertel; a wine-cheese from Styria; a creamy St. Severin and a gooey Red Monk, both from Schlierbach; Kracher, a light blue cheese, topped with a sugary syrup for contrast; and kuh le rose, a slightly sour, creamy hard cheese from Voitsberg that reminded me of a great Gruyere.
There was little chance of the waiters slacking off at my next stop, Babette's (Schleifmuhlgasse 17; 43-1-585-5165; www.babettes.at), as it has no waiters at all. Primarily a cookbook and spice shop for foodies, Babette's also serves lunch at a counter in the back.
After perusing the books, I took a seat and scanned the board for the day's offerings, starting off with a poached apple stuffed with a thick goose-liver mousse and served atop a slice of dense, raisiny fruit bread. As I ate, I was impressed by the stainless-steel nerves of the young chef. Despite appearing hardly old enough to drive, she coolly prepared each dish right under her customers' gaze: first an excellent prawn korma, a creamy mild curry filled with buttery stewed cashews and served with herbed rice, then a breathtaking chestnut-ricotta-stuffed chicken breast with celery-root puree, and warm figs in a port wine sauce.
With main courses around 10 euros, Babette's is hardly a big-ticket meal, and the lunch-only, paper-napkin atmosphere will probably not impress a date. It will, however, almost certainly impress food lovers, with its range of recipes, food histories, food-themed calendars, spices and probably the best meals anyone has ever had in a bookstore.
But for hard-core culinary cool, nothing can quite compare with the pharmacy-restaurant Saint Charles Alimentary (Gumpendorferstrasse 33; 43-676-586-1365; www.saint.info), a place so completely committed to the current buzzwords "local" and "seasonal" that many of its ingredients are gathered directly from Austrian forests by the head chef, Philipp Furtenbach, with the remainder purchased from local farmers. It is a dingy, narrow diner just across the street from the Saint Charles Apotheke, or pharmacy, and the kitchen prepares tinctures and herbal medicines, as well as vegetarian lunches during the week, with late-night dinners of as many as 13 courses, not necessarily vegetarian, available on Fridays.
When I visited, the fixed-menu vegetarian lunch (12.50 euros on my visit, but it changes daily) started off with an unsalted wild-root soup. Though it was disconcertingly brown and cloudy, it turned out to be powerfully aromatic and wonderfully concentrated in flavor, like the Central European equivalent of Japanese miso. After this was a salad of peppery green lentils, shallots and crisp slices of Jerusalem artichokes dressed with pumpkinseed oil.
The main course, a hearty porridge of spelt, walnuts, blackened red peppers and roasted pumpkins, dressed with a sour tomatillo sauce and chunks of a funky hard cheese from Vorarlberg, the westernmost part of Austria, gave the lie to the notion that meatless dishes can't be both filling and flavorful. The dessert, a creamy yogurt, was topped with elderberry syrup and something I'd never heard of: erdmandeln, or earth almonds, small, hard kernels with a coconutlike flavor that made me think of the tropics, but which, the chef-cum-waitress explained, were actually native to Europe.
It seemed like a metaphor. Just as most foreigners would consider Vienna's soundtrack to be the waltz, not down-tempo from Kruder & Dorfmeister, most of us will probably never visit places like SaintCharles, Babette's or the Dining Room, heading instead to the famous white-tablecloth places in the guidebooks. In light of the excellent meals, moderate prices and limited seating at most of the new arrivals, I'm sure that the Viennese prefer it that way.

- Τον Aρίσταρχο στα 2.300 μ.

Popularity places 1st World Heritage site in danger

For anyone touring the Galapagos Islands, it is hard to imagine the globe's first World Heritage Site is at risk. The marine reserve is populated with sea turtles and humpback whales, and the national park's trails are inhabited by herons and albatrosses.
Yet last June, Unesco added the archipelago to its "in danger list," specifically citing the fragile ecosystem and the negative effects of a sizable growth in tourism. The number of visitors to the Galapagos rose more than 250 percent to 145,000 in 2006 from 40,000 in 1990, while the number of commercial flights to the area has increased 193 percent from 2001 to 2006.
"Unless we start to make fundamental changes right now, in the next 10 to 15 years we will see the Galapagos suffer from both economic and environmental degradation," said Graham Watkins, executive director of the Charles Darwin Foundation, whose mission is to conserve the Galapagos through scientific research. "What we have here is an unsustainable model of development," he added in a telephone interview from his office in Ecuador.
According to a May report by the Darwin Foundation, "Galapagos at Risk," of which Watkins, a zoologist and ecologist, was a co-author, the islands' crisis does not just stem from an unprecedented rise in tourism, but also from a change in the marketplace.
"Early tourism in the Galapagos was characterized by nature-loving tourists," the report said, seeking "to learn about Darwin and see the amazing species that helped him to develop his theory of evolution." It noted that these guests were "easily accommodated by smaller, locally owned tour operators."
But, the study continued, the market expanded to include "eco-tourists," who also like to visit places like Machu Picchu, the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania, Easter Island and the Great Barrier Reef. These tourists are "often more selective in terms of required comfort and is better served by multinational tour operators," the report said.
A consequence has been that local owners cannot compete with the foreign-run companies doing business in the Galapagos. Of the $418 million generated by tourism annually, only $63 million is estimated to enter the local economy. And of the 80 tourism boats allowed to operate in the Galapagos, only about 40 percent are locally owned.
"We have to think about the people and not just the plants and animals, or it will all collapse," Watkins said.
One of the larger multinational companies in the area was Voyages of Discovery, which until recently was allowed to bring one 500-passenger ship into the islands each month.
"It is ironic that we are no longer permitted to call here, considering we had to operate under stricter environmental guidelines than any of the other boats," Mark Flager, vice president for sales, marketing and passenger services at Voyages of Discovery, said of Ecuador's decision last fall to rescind his company's permit. Though Discovery passengers were transferred to smaller boats to visit the national park trails, which can only be explored with a park department guide and a fixed itinerary, some feel large vessels are incongruous with the spirit of a site Unesco has called a living museum.
"I don't want to say that only Birkenstock types can come here," said Johannah Barry, president of the Galapagos Conservancy, which supports preservation and research in the Galapagos, including the Darwin Foundation's work. "It is just that now it has been Disneyfied, and the high number of people visiting is leading to a different type of experience. It becomes less reflective of the surroundings."
She added that all the boats waiting to ferry passengers ashore takes away from the natural scenery, Watkins said: "The big boats are basically hotels that sit in the port. Those passengers are not staying in locally run hotels or eating in the local restaurants."
But Flager said Voyages of Discovery's tour helped local residents even beyond the computers it donated to a school. "Some of our customers even cleaned up one of the beaches in San Cristobal of litter one day without anyone asking them to do so," he said, adding that Discovery's passengers were all "moved by the grandeur of the Galapagos" and returned home as environmental ambassadors for the area.
THE success of the travel business is also drawing Ecuadoreans from outside the islands to move to the Galapagos with the hope of getting a share of the tourist money. Newcomers have flocked to Galapagos Province, putting pressure on its natural resources and introducing invasive species. As a result, the Darwin Foundation report said, the Galapagos now has 748 species of introduced plants compared with 500 species of native plants. Fifty-five of these new species, it added, have the potential to cause "severe impacts to native biodiversity."
An increase in flight arrivals and the growth of activity sports like sea kayaking and sport fishing are also worrisome, according to Watkins. "People moving from island to island in boats makes it harder for us to put up barriers to prevent the introduction of new invasive species or infection," he said, adding that arriving planes are now sprayed to kill insects.
The Ecuadorean government, conservation groups and other organizations are working to develop a new sustainable plan for the Galapagos Islands. "Recognizing the problem was the first step," Watkins said.
But neither he nor Barry wants to dissuade tourists from visiting. They hope travelers will see what Watkins calls "the Mona Lisa of natural places in the world." Though he advises visitors to stay longer and spend money at local companies or those that are trying to benefit the local economy. There is one indisputable upside to tourism in this endangered area, though. As Barry put it, "We have found that when tourists actually visit the Galapagos, they leave caring about it and wanting to support all conservation efforts."
